A sapphire is a precious gemstone typically known for its blue color, though it can come in a variety of colors except red (which is classified as a ruby). It is a variety of the mineral corundum, composed primarily of aluminum oxide with trace elements that influence its color.
While blue is the most common and well-known color, sapphires can be found in pink, yellow, green, white, purple, and even black. These are known as "fancy sapphires."
The most valuable color is typically a deep, vivid blue, often referred to as "cornflower blue" or "Kashmir blue." However, padparadscha sapphires, which are a rare pinkish-orange, are also highly prized.
Yes, sapphires are one of the hardest gemstones, rating 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. This makes them very durable and suitable for everyday wear in jewelry.
Many sapphires on the market have undergone treatments to enhance their color and clarity. Common treatments include heat treatment, which is widely accepted in the industry. Untreated sapphires are rarer and often more valuable.
Distinguishing between natural and synthetic sapphires often requires specialized equipment and expertise. Synthetic sapphires are created in a lab and are generally less expensive. Certification from a reputable gemological laboratory can confirm the nature of the sapphire.
Sapphires are often associated with wisdom, nobility, and divine favor. They are the birthstone for September and are traditionally used to symbolize sincerity and faithfulness.
Sapphires are relatively easy to care for due to their hardness. Clean them with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and extreme temperature changes.
Sapphires are mined in several countries, including Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Madagascar, Thailand, and Australia. Kashmir, India, is famous for producing some of the finest blue sapphires.
A star sapphire is a type of sapphire that exhibits a star-like phenomenon known as asterism, caused by needle-like inclusions within the stone. These stones are typically cut en cabochon to best display the star effect.
Sapphires are graded based on their color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. The color is the most important factor, followed by clarity and cut. Larger sapphires are rarer and more valuable.
